2020 In Review

By Prisha Chakraborty

This year was full of unexpected things, so lets review the main events that happened not only in Great Valley, but also in the world.

One thing that continued from 2019 until March this year was the bushfires from Australia destroyed the lives of three billion animals. One of the worst wildfires in history, it was an underlying effect of global warming.

What else spread like wildfire- a pandemic. COVID-19 ended up causing multiple school districts, including GVSD, to switch to a new way of schooling- virtual learning, in April, which in turn led to new issues founded by students and teachers.

Of course, the idea of weeks off for a virus seemed to excite many people of all ages. One by one, When shutdown was announced on 16 of March by Pennsylvania Governor, the mood switched fast as everyone stocked on the necessities for quarantining for two weeks: hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, masks, and toilet paper- since obviously 100s of rolls of toilet paper is essential to not get sick.

Later in the year, however, mid October for GV students, schools switched to hybrid learning, half of the week being virtual and the other half being in school, and protecting students’ and faculty’s health has been a key challenge in doing this.

As summer break approached, peace in the United States was disrupted when a cop killed a man named George Floyd for a supposedly fake 20-dollar bill. To bring justice to George Floyd, and all the other lives taken without justice, a movement was started, Black Lives Matter.
