Patty Tsao and Her Sisters Make Masks

By Patty Tsao

So, what does one do during a quarantine, well my sisters and I, like many decided to make masks. we found instructions for making masks online and were surprised by how many different types of masks there are, some require using elastic strings for the ear loop while some just use fabric string.

Once we viewed the variety of instructions of how to make them, we then went to Joanne Fabrics together to buy materials. The store was open, but it only allowed up to 11 customers in the store, so we had to wait outside the store for about 10 minutes. When we finally got into the store, we were disappointed by how little the materials that we needed were left. We could only get one roll of elastic string and three yards of varying colored fabric.

In my opinion, the hardest part of making masks is determining how long the ear loop should be.  The loops are made of elastic string, so you need them loose enough to get over the ear, but tight enough to for the mask to stay fit on your face. We tried multiple times and found that their were too many differences in the size of one’s face.  So we ended up measuring all the faces in our family so the loop would be a custom fit.

Yet overall, we all enjoyed making our masks, working together, figuring it out, and passing some time in a positive way.
